Are Wooden Ladders Any Good?

The main place that you see wooden ladders is at home, or on a farm. Generally these adders are no longer used for industrial application, for good reason. These are heavy, hard to carry around and more importantly often unsafe. Timber is much harder to identify problems with, which is why so many break. Small hairline cracks often go undetected on these ladders, and then they snap when you are right at the top. Today, with the technology we have you are much better using a fiberglass or aluminum ladder.

If you have to use a wooden one, look over it very carefully. Paint will stop you from being able to identify any problems with the ladder, but you really need to do a thorough job. Ladders that are built incredibly strong, and that are looked after are usually fine. Like anything though, if you leave it out in the weather for days on end you can expect it to break the first time you go to use it! A lot of people use wooden ladders for loft entries, which work quite well.

These are cheap, and because they are indoors they tend to stay in a good condition for many years. Again though, you need to check that they are safe. Aluminum loft ladders are stronger and lighter weight, but at the same time they cost more to get and you generally can’t knock one up in your back shed! If you are using a wooden ladder at work, get it checked by a professional; there is a good chance that they will deem it unsafe for general work purposes.

Futon Mattress Covers Give You Flexibility in Your Decorating Decisions

Wood, metal, rattan or various other types of futon frames is not usually the most noticeable part of your futon. What is noticeable is the mattress cover. You can purchase futon mattress covers in a price range starting at $20.00 and going up from that point to whatever point your budget allows. Also, keeping an extra cover in storage gives you the opportunity and flexibility to quickly change your decor by simply changing the futon mattress cover.

There are several factors to take into consideration when buying a futon mattress cover. Covers come in an assortment of fabrics such as a cotton/polyester blend, denim, micro suede, chenille, linen, leather look vinyl, and more. Some fabrics are washable while others need professional cleaning. In addition to fabric choices, you have choices to make concerning how you want the cover to fit. Some come with zipper closings while other have elastic that secures them to the mattress. According to most product reviews, covers with elastic seem to be the most preferred and seem to stay more securely in place.

The amount of usage your futon receives has a great influence on your selection of fabric. A futon in a guest room would certainly receive less use than a futon in your living area or a child’s room. Chenille or linen would work well in a guest room. Leather look vinyl and micro or faux suede are good fabric choices if you have pets that will be sharing the futon with you. The leather look vinyl can easily be wiped off and a lint brush quickly removes pet hair from the faux suede. Even if don’t have a pet, these two fabric choices would be ideal for a family room where the futon receives a lot of use.

A futon is a good choice of furniture for a child’s room. You can change the mattress cover as the child matures so that is reflects their interest at various age levels. In addition, denim and cotton/polyester blends are good choices for a child’s room.

Futon mattress covers come in solid colors, animal prints, woodland themes, tropical designs, festive colors, oriental designs, and many more patterns. You can change the appearance of a room simply by changing the futon cover. You can change it to coordinate with a holiday theme, a tropical theme for summer, or to create a romantic mood any time of year.

Ten Secrets to a Happy Menopause

Menopause is a passage that happens in every woman’s life. Whether one chooses to live it as an opportunity for renewal and changes or an ordeal is entirely up to us. There is little known tricks and tips that can help every woman live a better and more happy menopause. After all, this period of a woman’s life can be a perfect time to start or continue a fulfilling existence.

Every woman will experience menopause. This period of her life characterized by the end of her menses and other related symptoms does not have to be an unpleasant one, on the contrary. Menopause often happens between the age of 45 and 55 and last anywhere between one to ten years. Some women will experience early menopause due to hormone imbalance or surgical removal of her ovaries.

A woman should always rely on the expert opinion of a competent doctor and/or nurse especially during her menopausal years. Besides assuring herself of competent medical care, there is a list of things she can do to ensure herself of a happy menopause:

1) Menopause is a time to be selfish! After all, most women will have invested so much time and energy to forward their career and family by the time they reach menopause. Taking time for yourself is a nice return of the pendulum and a wise decision. In fact, a happy woman will be able to enjoy more life and participate more actively in other’s life as well. I am giving every menopausal woman permission to be selfish right here, right now.

2) The menopause years are a great occasion to renew friendship or make new ones. There is nothing more fulfilling than spending a “night out with the girls” for a woman in her menopausal years. She has more free time to enjoy those special bonding. It is a known fact that laughter is the best anti-aging cream there is so all those fun nights out will be worth the while.

3) Menopause is also a very good time for a woman to ask herself what she always wanted to achieve but never got around to do. Now that she has more free time, the menopausal woman can ask herself what is left on her accomplishment list that she would really enjoy doing.

4) Menopause is an essential time to review an important checklist: your health. Have you been neglecting your health, eating fast food, sleeping less than you need to, not exercising properly? The easiest will be to book an appointment with your health care provider and make sure that you can re-start exercising. A moderate exercise is always recommended to begin with. Walking is a perfect example of a good exercise you can do daily. You can also get a dog or even better borrow your neighbor’s so you don’t have the burden of taking care of it!

5) In your complete health check, you will need to address if you need supplements like calcium, vitamins. One thing is certain is that everyone needs to incorporate drinking water as a daily habit.

6) Your menopausal years might also be a very good opportunity to travel. You can ask yourself if there is a trip you always wanted to do. If money is an issue, you can get very creative about putting aside the necessary founding and get going sooner than you think.

7) With your children out of the nest, you might end-up with a free room in your house or apartment. Instead of letting this room get crowded with unnecessary clutter why not make it your project to create your “special room”? Again, this project does not need to be costly. With a little imagination, you can put a futon, nice cushions and candles and there you have your perfect room. What will it be: a little reading room? A sewing room? An exercise room? etc

8) Menopause is also a very good time to revive your romantic flame. Whether you have been with the same person for a long time or are looking for your soul mate does not matter. These years can be the special occasion to let love into your life wide open and start enjoying all the happiness you deserve.

9) Menopause is also a good time to revise your personal finances. Are they stable? Do you have enough to go by? Consulting with a financial advisor might be a very wise move.

10) Most importantly, menopause is the best time to pamper yourself and reward yourself for all that you have done so far. It might be a good time to start a great project that you always wanted to do. Such project could be coming on a medical mission and bond with people who have tremendous needs. If you are concerned about finding the money to bring such a project to completion, I can tell you that when I go on medical missions, many menopausal women come along. How did they get the necessary money you ask? They just raised the money or asked their local charity association (Lions, Knight’s of Columbus, etc). Do not worry, you don’t need a medical degree to be very helpful, you just need a big hearth!

Health Tips for Men Over 50

Men over the age of 50 are still active and in their prime. But to maintain and prevent the onset of illness and ailments, men should consider these tips once they reach this age:

• Go for a physical exam annually. As your body ages, some physical symptoms are also seen. You can discuss these with your doctor. Seek advice on the treatment of minor ailments and steps on the prevention of other diseases such cancer, hypertension, diabetes, and heart disease. Included in the physical examination are routine blood tests, urine and stool tests, and physical tests like treadmill, ECG, and lung x-rays.

• Have your blood examined. For blood tests, you should test for cholesterol levels. This can help you determine if you are eating right and if you have healthy habits. This can help you prevent the onset of hypertension or heart disease. Smokers and diabetics usually have high cholesterol levels.

• Go for rectal and colon exam. Undergoing stool testing, colon testing, and rectal exam annually can be a great help in detecting the growth of polyps or cancer of the colon.

• Regularly visit your dentist. These regular oral examinations can help in the early detection of tooth decay, disease of the gums, or oral cancer. Those with unhealthy habits like smoking, chewing of tobacco, and poor oral hygiene run the risk of many dental problems. Some studies suggest that heart attack and stroke are closely associated with gum disease, so this is a serious matter.

• Have your eyes examined. The annual examination of your eyes is very important as this can detect problems with your vision such as glaucoma or the early onset of cataracts.

• Have your annual prostate examination. Prostate exam is a very important test for men of age 40 and above. This can help in detecting prostate cancer early, which can give you a high percentage of survival.

• Visit a psychotherapist. Not for anything else, men should visit a doctor to screen for depression. Your mental health is as important as your physical health. Talking to a doctor can help you with underlying depression or anxiety.

As with everything else, eating right along with having regular exercises are the most important ways to prevent diseases. Most importantly, these physical examinations and healthy practices can go a long way in early detection and in the higher survival rate against diseases.

Two Guest Bed Options to Stay Away From a Folding Bed

So you’ve got people coming to your house and you don’t have enough beds for everybody. You need to find a place for them to sleep but you really really really don’t want to get a folding bed because everybody knows how terrible they are. What is a considerate host to do? Before you buckle and buy something that you know you will not be happy with, take a little time to thoroughly consider all of your options. If you open up yourself to some possibly non-standard choices, you may find something that fits the bill. Consider the following options.

Despite its reputation as an uncomfortable sofa and an uncomfortable bed, plus the hippy connotations that come with it, a futon bed is a reasonable choice in place of a folding bed. In many ways it is very similar to the standard folding bed option, the sofa sleeper, but instead of hiding the bed away in the depths of the sofa, it’s right there, just folded in half. While the futons that most people are aware of were cheap and uncomfortable because they were being bought by college students, many futons today are high-tech and comfortable. Many different designs and finishes are available, including metal framed futons. While different in feel and look than other sofas and beds, if they can fit into your home decor, they could be a good choice.

Another choice that may be a little controversial is the camping mattress. No longer simply thin pieces of foam that do little to cushion or provide good night’s rest, many camping mattresses are designed more for car camping and not backpacking. Without the need to be carried on the back, they have ballooned up into 2, 3 and even 3.5 inches of memory foam topped self-inflating goodness. Of course, this larger size will be heavier and require more storage space, but will take up far less space than any folding bed you may be contemplating. The only problem is if your guests will be willing to “sleep on the floor” or if they, for either health reasons or personal issues, require to sleep higher up and off of the floor.
